Nellie Brown Mitchell: Dover's Renowned African American Soprano

Nellie Brown Mitchell, born in Dover, NH in 1845, was known as "one of Boston's favorite cantatrices." Having studied at the New England Conservatory, she is one of the first African American classically trained musicians. This presentation will cover Mitchell's early days in Dover, her concerts throughout New England, her touring of southern states, and her entrepreneurship as a teacher and inventor.
